The quarterback, who led his team to a Super Bowl victory last year, issued the following statement through the organization, as reported by Bob Condotta per The Seattle Times:

I made the difficult decision to file for divorce. Clearly, decisions like these don’t come easily. Ashton and I respectfully ask for prayers, understanding and privacy during this difficult time. Moving forward, I will have no further comments on this personal matter.

The couple married in 2012, just a few short months before the signal caller was drafted by the Seattle Seahawks out of Wisconsin. On draft day, when the euphoria of Wilson’s selection led to this unusual reaction and image, Ashton became an Internet phenomenon, as some of you may recall.

Ashton was always seen by Wilson’s side during his frequent visits to the children’s hospital, and at first glance, the pair seemed perfect for each other. However, Wilson’s condition worsens and Ashton’s presence becomes more and more noticeable.

Unfortunately, people are constantly evolving as a radio host as well Joe Ovies pointed out, most of the time we have no idea what goes on behind the scenes, especially when it comes to the most public figures in sports:

You never want to see someone you care about go through the pain of a divorce, but all we can do is have faith that it was a well thought out decision that would ultimately be in the best interest of both parties going forward.
