JKCA Money Laundering Case: Farooq granted bail in JKCA money laundering case, next hearing on September 26

Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) head and former prime minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah, was granted bail on Saturday in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) money laundering case. On the matter of the subpoena, Farooq appeared in court on Saturday. After asking for regular bail, he got relief from the court by filling out a surety of Rs 50,000.

The court has set the next hearing in the case on September 26. During this, Farooq will be questioned in court. On Saturday he was summoned to the court of the chief district and session judge, Srinagar. Dr. Farooq’s lawyer, Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan, told the court in the morning that the former prime minister was unable to attend due to health problems.

At the court’s insistence, Farooq arrived at the court at 1:00 pm, where he obtained regular bail. On July 23, the court had issued a subpoena against Abdullah over a complaint filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against him and others in the JKCA money laundering case. The agency also questioned Dr Farooq Abdullah several times.

Dr. Farooq served as president of the JKCA from 2001 to 2012. Between 2004 and 2009, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the ED uncovered financial embezzlement. The ED has already attached assets worth over Rs 21 crore in this case. This includes Abdullah’s real estate worth Rs 11.86 crore.

The ED says the investigation so far has revealed that former JKCA treasurer Ahsan Ahmed Mirza along with other JKCA officials has appropriated funds worth Rs 51.90 crore. This proceeds was used to pay off his personal and business responsibilities.

Subsequently, a case was recorded at the Ram Munshi Bagh Police Station in Srinagar and a money laundering investigation was initiated against JKCA officials. The case was subsequently handed over to the CBI on the recommendation of the High Court. CBI files a complaint against former JKCA officials for fraud.
