HMD launches its most environmentally friendly smartphones

Nokia unveiled its new 5G smartphones at the IFA. Among the new vintage we find the X30 and the G60 that promise to respect the environment better; and at attractive prices.

HMD Global did not come to Berlin empty-handed, and the brand behind Nokia presented some news. The manufacturer does not necessarily compete in the high-end model segment, preferring to rely on other elements to stand out. It involves a nostalgic operation by reviving old glories or accessible products. At IFA 2022 these were entry-level and mid-range smartphones with the Nokia X30 5G, G60 5G and C31. It is above all the first two, compatible with 5G, that will interest us and not only for their technical data.

The manufacturer promises environmental efforts for the X30 and G60 that they feature as their own “The most ecological devices”. The most successful is the X30, which has a 6.43 inch AMOLED display in tune with time (Full HD +, 90 Hz, 700 nits) ea Snapdragon 695. The Qualcomm chip, here flanked by 6 to 8 GB of RAM and 128 to 256 GB of storage, has proven particularly good with Samsung (Galaxy A23 5G), Sony (Xperia 10 IV) or Xiaomi (Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G) . The set comes with a 4200 mAh batterycompatible with 33W charging.

On the photographic side, Nokia describes its X30 as one of the most comfortable smartphones in its field. The brand offers a 50 megapixel main sensor with optical image stabilization and f / 1.8 aperture. A 13 megapixel ultra wide-angle module (f / 2.4) will come to support it; while a 16 megapixel sensor occupies the front. Note that the rear camera is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass with DX +, which allows 98% of the light to pass through.

And the ecology?

Don’t expect a device comparable to the Fairphone, HMD’s speech is much less ambitious. It also leaves us a little unsatisfied, because this “eco-responsible” approach simply translates into the presence of recycled materials and a three-year warranty. However, the brand behind Nokia is making an effort to offer a case made from 100% recycled aluminum. Added to this is a rear part made up of 65% recycled plastic and 70% recycled packaging. As for the follow-up of the X30, it includes 3 years of warranty, 3 years of OS updates and 3 years of monthly security updates.

Nokia G60: same approach, at a lower price

In addition to the X30, Nokia is launching a G60 more affordable and focused on the essential. Also billed as “eco-friendly”, this smartphone is based on a back made from 100% recycled plastic and a frame made from 60% recycled plastic. Has a 6.58 inch LCD screenFull HD + playback with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Under the hood he holds the chip Snapdragon 695 which offers 5G compatibility and adds 4 to 6GB of RAM. As for the photo there is one 50 megapixel sensor without optical stabilization. It is paired with a 5 megapixel ultra wide angle and a 2 megapixel depth sensor. Note that this 190 gram (165.99 x 75.93 x 8.61mm) smartphone adds an IP52 certification.

Compromises from the manufacturer allow you to offer the device at a more affordable price. the Nokia G60 5G is already available for 359.99 euros.

Finally, Nokia adds a C31 model to its catalog. This is an entry-level model that focuses on 4G; offer a modest data sheet. Powered by a Unisoc SC9863A1 SoC, it offers a 6.7-inch HD + LCD display, 3 to 4 GB of RAM; in addition to a 5050 mAh battery that promises good autonomy. It adds a triple photo sensor consisting of a 13 megapixel main module and two 2 megapixel sensors (macro and depth). The C31 is expected to land in Europe for a price of 129 euros.
