Heavy gunfire rocked Baghdad amid violent protests

Supporters of a prominent Iraqi Shiite cleric fired rocket-propelled grenades into Iraq’s Green Zone as machine-gun fire crackled overhead on Tuesday, deepening the political chaos gripping the Middle Eastern nation. Those supporting the influential cleric Muqtada al-Sadr fired on the Green Zone, where Iraqi security forces appeared to be firing on them. Live television footage showed the chaos, with at least one injured man being taken away in a three-wheeled rickshaw, with the Iraqi Foreign Ministry visible behind them. The death toll reached 22 Iraqis on Tuesday after the unrest that erupted the previous day, according to two medical officials. The Iraqi military said four rockets were fired into the heavily fortified Green Zone.
