Elim Chan, the first female baton in 71 years at the Santander festival

Elim Chan (Hong Kong, 1986) will conduct this Tuesday the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias in Santander International Festivalthus becoming the first woman to take the baton in its 71-year history.

In addition to works by Eötvös (talking drums) and Rimsky-Korsakov (Scheherazade)two premieres commissioned by the festival will be offered to Beatrice Arzamendi, Omne vivum ex vivoand Israel Lopez Estelche, Farewell, farewell souls.

The Santander International Festival emphasized in a statement that Chan is among the most sought-after young directors and admired for its unique combination of “drama and tenderness, strength and finesse”which made her the first woman to win the Donatella Directing Film Competition.

has been appointed music director of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra from this season and she is also the Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra from the 2018-2019 season.

Despite his youth, he leads the Symphony Orchestra of the Principality of Asturias with a program that combines premieres with well-known works.

Successor to the old Provincial Symphony Orchestra, whose origins date back to 1939, the Principality of Asturias Symphony Orchestra (OSPA) was created in 1991 under the auspices of the Principality’s government, with the aim of enriching the region musically and culturally.

OSPA, which is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary, consists of 69 professors from various countries of the European Union, as well as from Russia, the United States, Ecuador and the Philippines.
