Israel and Palestine have been at war for years. The end of the conflict is not in sight. In fact: Since March 2022, Israel has been suffering from new terrorist attacks, which the Israeli army has not been spared.

Recent events

  • Israel and Turkey want to restore their relations. Both countries have decided to reinstate their ambassadors and consuls-general, Israeli Prime Minister Jair Lapid’s office announced on Wednesday (17 August). This is the result of Lapid’s visit to Ankara in June and talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Former allies Turkey and Israel fell apart in 2010 after ten Turkish citizens were killed when the Israeli navy rammed a Gaza naval vessel. In 2016 there was the first agreement. Since the Gaza crisis in 2018, however, the two countries do not have embassies in other countries.
  • According to his statement, the Israeli army closed the tunnel that the Islamic group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, on Monday (15 August). which was created as a route for fighters from the region to Israel. Palestinian militants used these tunnels during the 2014 Gaza war to mislead Israeli forces. Since then, Israel has developed detection technologies and built an underground barrier equipped with sensors. The military has uncovered several tunnels in recent years. “We knew the tunnel was there, but we waited until (the work) was over before we took action,” an Israeli military spokesman said. It was a “non-kinetic operation,” meaning Israel flooded the tunnel.
  • A Palestinian brother has been killed as Israel attacks East Jerusalem. The man tried to attack border police with a knife, police said on Monday (15 August). The army is searching for illegal weapons in the Arab district of Kafr Akab. According to Palestinian sources, the 21-year-old was shot in the head at close range. The day before, a Palestinian shot a bus carrying believers near the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Eight people were injured, two seriously. The suspect was arrested after he surrendered to the police.
  • According to Syrian reports, three soldiers have been killed and three others injured in an Israeli airstrike in Syria. On Sunday evening (August 14), targets near the capital of Damascus were hit by Israeli rockets, the Syrian news agency Sana reported. At the same time, the region of Tartus was invaded by the Mediterranean Sea. The Israeli army initially did not respond to the reports. The Israeli air force regularly bombards Syria where there is a civil war. Israel wants to prevent its arch-enemy Iran and its allies from increasing their military power in Syria. Along with Russia, Iran is the Syrian government’s most important partner in the civil war.
