Apple announces new documentary film about the ‘haenyeo’ of South Korea

Apple Original Films today announced a new untitled documentary film from Extracurricular and A24, featuring the story of the legendary “haenyeo” of Jeju Island in South Korea. The film is directed by Peabody Award nominee Sue Kim (“The Speed Cubers ”) and is the first project of Apple TV + partnership with Malala Yousafzai’s Extracurricular production company.

The film tells the story of the “sirens of Korea”, elderly freedivers whose work in fishing for seafood off the coast of Jeju Island has sustained their community for generations. Matriarchs, breadwinners and rowdy grandmothers, the number of haenyeo has declined in recent decades. But now their younger descendants are helping to revive the revered and often dangerous lifestyle of their ancestors as they fight to protect the ocean from the looming environmental threat.

The co-production comes from Extracurricular, the production company of women’s rights activist and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, who is partnering with Apple TV + to create original programming, and A24, which is also partnering with Apple on the highly anticipated next. documentary by Steve Martin.

Yousafzai and Erika Kennair, president of Extracurricular productions, will produce together with A24.

Fox and legendary actor and comedian Steve Martin.
