The Invitation – Picture: Screen Gems
The new supernatural horror film from Jessica M. Thompson from Screen Gems and Sony Pictures Releasing is now in theaters. It will appear on Netflix in select regions in the coming months and years. Here’s a breakdown of when you’ll be able to stream the movie on Netflix.
Starring Nathalie Emmanuel, Thomas Doherty and Stephanie Corneliussen, the new horror is about a woman who takes a DNA test and discovers a long-lost cousin. She is then invited to a lavish wedding, but all is not what it seems and she is thrown into hell.
The film was released in theaters on August 26 and topped the box office that weekend, grossing $7 million.
Reviews of the film so far have not been particularly good. RottenTomatoes has the film at 21% from critics with a 57% audience score.
WeGoThisCovered had an average review saying that the film “aims high, and while regularly impressive on a visual and aesthetic level, the storytelling lets the gothic horror fall flat in the end.”
When will The invitation be on Netflix in the United States and Canada?
Let’s start with the two regions that will get this movie as part of the first window deal that both regions have.
In the case of India, they continuously receive new Sony movies approximately 120 days after their theatrical release. Such was the case with Morbius, which arrived on Netflix India on August 1 after premiering in theaters on April 1 (it is yet to appear on Netflix US).
In India, the film should be available around December 24, 2022.
In the US, you might get the movie around that date, but Sony movies don’t always come to Netflix. Uncharted it took 168 days to reach Netflix US.
This means that Netflix US is currently expected to receive the invite between December 2022 and February 2023.
Other Sony films headed to Netflix in the US in the coming months include High speed train starring Brad Pitt, Morbius (expected in September/October 2022), Father Stu, Where the Crawdads Sing, and many more in the years to come.
Will other Netflix regions get the invite?
The likely answer is yes, although we don’t have the details right now.
Netflix in multiple regions gets new Sony movies, but usually a year or two after their initial release.
For example, Netflix Canada and UK get Sony movies 2 years after their theatrical release. This also applies to regions such as Belgium, Greece, Japan, Poland, Spain, Sweden and South Africa.
This would mean that Netflix in these regions will see The invitation added sometime in 2024
