‘Unbelievable’ – punters in stitches as hurdles bypass and race delayed in Worcester due to swarm of bees

THERE were unbelievable scenes at the Worcester races on Wednesday night.

In the second race, two obstacles had to be jumped – because of a swarm of bees.

Eagle-eyed course attendants noticed just before the second race on the map that a swarm of bees had formed on the wing of two obstacles in the home straight.

This led to a delay of about seven minutes as officials tried to resolve the problem without harming the insects.

Clerk of the Course Nessie Chanter sought the advice of Stratford Clerk of the Course George Lea, who is also a beekeeper.

Fortunately there was no problem in the story as Chanter bravely removed the wing of the fences herself and placed them well away from the horses and jockeys in the middle of the track.

Chanter said: “I spoke to George Lea from Stratford, who is a bee expert, and he gave us some advice on how to deal with it.

“We removed the wings and luckily we were back to normal pretty quickly, there wasn’t much of a delay.”

Before the swarm of bees could be contained, four of the eight fences in the second race had to be missed.

Chanter added: “We didn’t think it was safe to jump so the horses and jockeys had to go around the fences in the second race.

“Because of the location of the start, they avoided the open ditch because that was the first fence in that race.”

Sky Sports Racing presenter Sean Boyce was unimpressed and felt they should have continued to race.

He said: “I’m not sure the horses would mind running past the bees. I don’t see why that would cause a delay.’

But punters saw the funny side of it on social media and were quick to downplay the incident.

One said, “To beekeeper or not to beekeeper? This is the question.”

Another posted: “The jockeys better make a bee line for the rail.”

While another joked: “The punters are STAB again! Two fences are omitted.
