After their successful first collaboration in Falling from grace Tyler Perry and Netflix continue their partnership with another ambitious feature film: The jazzman’s blues. The film is Perry’s favorite project and is the first screenplay he wrote 26 years ago. After trying to do it for two decades, he finally found the perfect partners in Netflix to produce it.
The jazzman’s blues will be written and directed by Perry, who is best known for his projects as the Madea character in many of his films, House Payne’s, The Oval, and more.
Perry has spoken about the film several times in the past and most recently commented on this partnership with Netflix:
“I’ve been waiting a quarter of a century to tell this story and now is the perfect time and Netflix is the perfect partner. This is my labor of love; the one I want to do more than anything.
The film was notably part of Lionsgate’s 2006 slate.
Producer Michelle Sneed, a longtime collaborator of Perry’s, will also work on this project as an executive producer.
This isn’t believed to be the only Tyler Perry project in development at Netflix. In December 2021, we reported that Netflix is currently working on a brand new, untitled film in which Perry will star.
It adds to the manufacturer’s other Netflix list available on the service, including Homecoming of Madea, Falling from grace and A fatal affair. Perry is also involved Don’t look up.
When will The jazzman’s blues be released on Netflix?
Thanks to the official release of Netflix’s updated 2022 movie list, we can now confirm that the release date of Friday, September 23, 2022 is correct.
Before being released on Netflix, A Jazzman’s Blues will make its debut at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, which is set to take place in August 2022.
According to Tyler Perry’s website:
“Tyler Perry will be premiering his highly anticipated film ‘Jazzman’s Blues’ at the festival this year, with a series of clips and a talk show scheduled for Saturday, August 6 at 8:00 p.m.”
The film will then be available in select theaters from August 16, 2022.
What is the plot of The jazzman’s blues?
The jazzman’s blues set in the post-World War II South, a young black jazz singer leaves his country town in search of fame.
The film’s timeline will range from 1937 to 1987 and will delve deep into the character’s past, present and future, leading to some very interesting storytelling. Here’s the official logline for the film:
“Moving from 1937 to 1987, an investigation into an unsolved murder uncovers a story full of forbidden love, deceit and a secret kept for 40 years.”
The film will be rated R, according to reports.
Who is thrown into The jazzman’s blues?
In March 2021, relative newcomers Joshua Boone (Wheels, Premature) and Soleia Pfeiffer (The good fight, curb your enthusiasm) were announced as cast in the lead roles.
Both have a background in theater work and singing, with Pfeiffer performing the role of Elsa Hamilton in the acclaimed musical Hamiltonthe US tour. No other cast has been announced yet.
Originally in 1995, Tyler Perry intended the film to star himself, Will Smith, Halle Berry, Diana Ross and Ben Kingsley. He commented on this in a recent interview:
“I aged out of it because all the characters are in their twenties. So I’m looking for this new talent, brand new fresh faces who have dedicated themselves to the craft and who are amazing actors to play these roles.”

What is the production status of The jazzman’s blues?
Production for The jazzman’s blues started in May 2021, and in true Tyler Perry style, only lasted a few weeks. Filming ended on June 2, 2021.
It was filmed entirely in Atlanta, Georgia and Savannah, according to local reports.

Additionally, local reports claimed that the film took over the city and was shot around “Cotton Avenue, Second Street, Mulberry Street and Cherry Street.”
Of course, some of the filming also took place in Tyler Perry’s studio.
After filming wrapped, Perry took to social media to talk about what the project means to him:
“About 26 years ago, I was struggling and wasn’t sure if I would make it in the entertainment business. I had managed to sneak (because I was broke) to a play called Seven Guitars and had a chance to talk to the great August Wilson at an after party. I didn’t know how he would take me because the plays I was doing weren’t on Broadway, but he was so kind and encouraging and inspiring that I went home and wrote my first script. I called it the Jazzman’s Blues,”
