With the cost of living rising and the energy price cap set to rise even further, many of us are looking for ways to make our money stretch even further.

One way to do this is to reduce food waste, although there are many reasons other than saving money that might make you want to do this – such as the positive impact on the environment.

A zero-waste kitchen can seem daunting at first, but don’t stress.

All you really need to know is that the idea is simply to live less wastefully and try to reuse, recycle and compost instead of throwing things away.

Zero waste efforts don’t have to be intimidating. Taking it one step at a time and learning as you go will help you become more mindful of what you do with your food.

These tips for making food last longer should help you on your way to less waste and save you money on groceries at the same time.

Puree and freeze

If you have spinach that’s disappearing in the fridge, throw it in a blender, puree it, then store it in serving-sized pots in the freezer to add to smoothies or sauces so it doesn’t go to waste.

The leaves can also be frozen whole and added to stir-fries and sauces from frozen.

Store your nut butters upside down

Storing your nut butter upside down in the cupboard will keep it from splitting and drying out, meaning you’ll use it all up instead of constantly buying new tubs.

Make your own pitta bread

Making small pitta breads is so easy and really quick. Just mix flour and water with a little salt and yeast or natural yogurt and you have fresh bread to dip into soup, stew or make a quick lunch.

This is a great tip if you often throw away half a loaf of bread that you didn’t manage to get before it went bad.

Buy in bulk and freeze

Buying larger packs of meat and freezing it in portions for when you need it will not only save you money as it’s usually cheaper to buy in bulk, but it also means you have less waste if you don’t go over through everything before that it goes bad in the fridge.

Go to a zero waste store

If you have a zero-waste store near you, take your boxes and containers with you to stock up on things like cereal, cereal, coffee and dry foods so you buy what you need and you don’t have many packages to dispose of after.

Use simple tricks to keep vegetables fresh

Store leafy greens such as salad leaves in paper towels in the refrigerator. This absorbs water and stops them going soft or moldy as quickly.

To keep broccoli fresh longer, cut off the end and store it in water in the refrigerator.

Try canned fish

Consider canned fish from sustainable sources, such as salmon or mackerel, that will be available whenever you need a quick meal.

They also last for years in the cupboard – great when you have nothing fresh in the fridge for dinner!

Freeze sandwiches

Did you know you can freeze sandwiches? Just make sandwiches for the week and freeze them, then pull a set out of the freezer when you leave for work or school and they’ll be thawed by lunchtime.

This saves a lot of time and helps you stay organized.

Grow your own fresh onions

If you store spring onions in water, they will start to shoot new spring onions, which you can then grow and eat once they are big enough. You can also plant the ends in some soil and grow them over and over again.

Embrace batch cooking

Batch cooking and freezing whole meals not only helps you get everything done in one sitting, but means you have fresh meals when you need them.

Simply prepare your meals and store them in the freezer until you need them.

Take them out in the morning and they’ll be ready by dinner time.

Make your own pasta

Pasta can be made so easily and is delicious freshly made. You only need flour, egg, salt and olive oil. Just make it into a dough and then roll it out to cut it. Boil for 5 minutes and it’s ready when you need it.

I hope these tips help you on your way to saving money on the groceries you buy and help you work towards a zero waste kitchen.
