The best budget cars for a beginner track, in your opinion

“Man, there are so many different schools of thought on what makes a good track car. FWD? AWD? rear wheel? There are probably four or five of each of these that would be perfect. Is it a SPECIAL track car or something you track on a daily basis? It’s just so wide open.

“But if I had to pick just one, I think I’d probably pick any Mustang I could afford. From a $2500 rusty Fox to a decent 7-8k SN95 to a $25k S550, there’s something for every budget.

“You have some decent power, but not enough to get you into real trouble. You have a twitchy rear end that will teach you a bit of cornering restraint. You have replacement parts at any parts store in town. You have plenty of space in the trunk to haul supplies and tools to the track. There is a back seat if you need it. Insurance is not scary. The aftermarket is huge, and the cars themselves are plentiful.

“I have nothing but personal disdain for Ford products, but there’s only one nameplate that has cars that can lose to the Geo metro or give a lap to the 911. That’s the Mustang.”

It seems there can be a Mustang for every occasion and every budget! That’s before Ford even released theirs the next wave of track-focused Mustangs.
