Sony Xperia 5 IV, the return of the premium compact smartphone

IFA 2022 mandatory, Sony has just made official its new compact and premium smartphone. This is the Sony Xperia 5 IV.

Surprise or not, after the mid-year Sony Xperia 1 IV (on trial HERE) Sony is taking the start of the school year to announce its new premium compact smartphone. So, if we are talking about the start of the new school year and not necessarily the IFA, it is because this year too, sony he is not present at the Berlin exhibition. In any case, it is not surprising that the Japanese company has just released its new one Xperia 5 IV or Mark 4 for friends.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV surprised everyone as it was the first smartphone ever with a variable optical zoom between 85mm and 125mm. Really impressive from a technological point of view. And we prefer to warn you right away, we will not find this variable optical zoom on the Xperia 5IV. On the other hand, while all compact smartphones, premium or not, only offer a photo block consisting of two cameras, Sony offers a relatively versatile photo block with the Xperia 5 IV. So there is a main wide angle, an ultra wide angle and a 2.5x optical zoom telephoto lens.

Sony Xperia obliges, we find the lines of the Xperia 1 IV announced for the summer and whose test we propose HERE. The Sony Xperia 5 IV is also in line with what Sony has been offering for a few years now. So we find a design that we already knew, all in length and this screen in 21: 9 format. Obviously no 4K on the compact smartphone. The top and bottom edges are always thicker than the competition but with this design along the grip is even better, especially with this compact size. We love. Compared to its predecessor, the Xperia 5 IV is sharper and we find IP65 / 68 certification with a frosted glass back and an aluminum and flat profile.

There isn’t a notch on the side of the screen as previously mentioned as the bezels at the top and bottom of the screen are still there. It’s still an OLED panel, 50% brighter than its predecessor, with a 120Hz refresh rate. Furthermore, we find support for HDR10 +. The fingerprint sensor is still located on the standby button on the right edge of the smartphone. And as always, we find the physical photo trigger with a small texture easier to spot.

The main features:

In the intestine we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the high-end SoC of Android smartphones of 2022. On the memory side we find 128GB of internal memory and 8GB of RAM. This is also the only version available and we find 128GB in 2022 somewhat limited, especially for a premium smartphone. On the other hand, it’s starting to get rare, but the Sony Xperia 5 IV has a MicroSD port. For the battery, Sony doesn’t go overboard and offers a 5000mAh battery with 30W fast charging and wireless charging. And finally we find Android 12 with Sony Xperia overlay. And as you’d expect, we have 5G and WiFi 6E.

Photographic versatility

If the photo block isn’t as impressive as that of the Xperia 1 IV, it’s still more versatile than all of its competitors because there’s a photo block consisting of 3 cameras. All cameras have a 12 Megapixel Exmor RS for Mobile sensor. In addition, the main camera offers a focal length of 24mm and the ultra wide-angle camera a focal length of 16mm. And on the telephoto lens we find a focal length of 60mm or an optical zoom of 2.5x. The main camera and telephoto lens also offer optical stabilization.

Obviously we find the Japanese brand’s super fast autofocus with all these Dual PD sensors, including Real Time Eye AF technology, real-time object tracking, but also a burst mode up to 20 fps. For video, the Sony Xperia 5 IV still supports video recording up to UltraHD at 120 fps and slow motion up to 960 fps in Full HD. Just like on the Xperia 1 IV, all lenses support 4K video recording at 120 fps! Of course we find the Cinematography Pro application “powered by CineAlta”, but also the Photography Pro and Videography Pro application for more video settings, the external monitor function and the management of live streams.

Announced during the presentation of the Xperia 1 IV, the Music Pro application is finally available and for those who do not know it yet, it is a cloud-based audio recording application.

“In addition, Music Pro will enhance the voices recorded with the smartphone as if they were recorded in a professional studio, allowing the user to record complete tracks at home or on the road. Cloud processing removes unwanted noise from recorded audio using sound source separation technology. It then reproduces the frequency response of Sony’s high-quality condenser microphones, producing reverb comparable to that of a professional studio. When the user sings or plays the acoustic guitar at the same time, the Music Pro app can separate and mix vocals and instruments with any balance. Sound recording and editing is free, while cloud processing for high-quality sound is subject to a monthly fee. We are waiting for more details on this part. “
