Rick and Morty fans can watch the duo embark on intergalactic space adventures for the rest of the season, according to co-creator Dan Harmon.

The popular animated series, which began in 2013, is due to premiere its sixth series on September 4 in the US before being released in the UK the following day.

The synopsis for the first episode, titled Solaricks, says, “They’re back, baby! The Smiths are dealing with the fallout from last season, and Rick and Morty are stranded in space, drifting in the ruins of the citadel.

Speaking about the upcoming series, Dan said he thinks the series could go on for, well, forever.

“As far as the longevity of the show, it just feels endless to me,” he said.

“That’s the easy part. And I think that might be the reason for some of the frustration on the part of the fans, because my initial commitment to just, I think, a good TV show is one that lasts 1,000 episodes.

Co-creator Justin Roiland agreed, noting to The Wrap that he and his team “can work as long as we want.”

The show spans multiple universes, so the possibilities for multi-dimensional adventures for Rick and Morty are endless.

And while series six is yet to begin, the showrunners are already working on season eight.

In 2018, between series three and four, Adult Swim ordered a further 70 episodes of the show.

Since each series has around 10 episodes, this could mean that the show could go on for at least 10 episodes right now.

Dan said the team behind Rick and Morty is currently working on releasing a series a year, with showrunner Scott Marder keeping them “on a schedule that mostly involves being so ahead of the curve that we can actually release things on time.”

Rick and Morty series six premieres on E4 at 4am on Monday 5 September.
