what you should Know
- Qualcomm’s next budget Snapdragon chipset appears to have leaked.
- The alleged Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 with its new name may appear later this year.
- Apparently, the chipset will support mmWave 5G and Wi-Fi 6E.
It looks like Qualcomm is gearing up to launch its latest mid-range smartphone chipset, which is likely to follow the company’s new Snapdragon branding.
The tip comes from Evan Blass, who has published the full specification of the alleged Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 SoC, shedding some light on the upcoming chipset, including the new name. The image shown appears to be the original product brief that we usually see on Qualcomm’s site next to chipset models once they’re announced.
Delving into the details of the leaked specification suggests that the alleged Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 SoC is built on a 4nm process, as has been the case with recent flagship SoCs from Qualcomm. The chipset will include an unknown Kryo processor clocked at up to 2.2 GHz. The spec sheet doesn’t exactly specify the CPU and GPU cores, and the Adreno GPU is still unspecified.
However, the other parameters of the upcoming chipset include Snapdragon X62 5G Modem-RF system. This means we can expect support for Sub-6 and mmWave 5G spectrums, a good sign for mmWave speeds on more budget 5G phones. The new SoC’s device display support includes a 120Hz refresh rate with up to Full HD+ resolution. There is support for up to 12 GB LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
In terms of optics, Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 can support up to 108MP photo capture and up to 48MP single camera with 4K HDR video capture or it can be dual camera with 25MP primary lens up to 16MP secondary camera.
Connectivity options besides 5G include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and USB Type-C support. The SoC also supports Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ charging technology.
Qualcomm announced a new Snapdragon chipset name game last year. First in the batch was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, the successor to the Snapdragon 888/888+ chipsets. Devices with the flagship chipset started shipping this year with the Galaxy S22 series. It was followed by its next iteration, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. This May, the company also announced the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, although phones with that chipset have yet to be announced.
These above mentioned parameters may encourage OEMs to innovate the best budget Android phones with the upcoming supposed new chipset. There is no official announcement regarding this chipset from Qualcomm yet. We can predict that this will happen sooner or later, ie. at the Snapdragon Tech Summit in Hawaii scheduled for this November (15-17). The event is also expected to unleash another powerful chipset – the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.
