Quake is now playable on the connected watch

Twenty-six after its release, Quake has just found a new medium of choice. The game runs on the small screen of the Apple Watch thanks to a port that is far from obvious.

The game death it is regularly the subject of unusual ports and the cult FPS runs on many carriers. We could see him running on a scientific calculator powered by rotten potatoes, on a Game & Watch, on a pregnancy test … and even in death. This time it is the one presented as his illustrious successor to be the subject of a port for the atypical month. Released in 1996, earthquake stands out thanks to a 3D engine and this often makes the various doors more impressive than those of death. Remember that the latter used an engine that could be described as “fake 3D”, in which the camera cannot move up or down.

Developer MyOwnClone took up the challenge of Running Quake on an Apple Watch. For the occasion, he was unable to take advantage of the latest Apple models and uses a Series 5. As we can see in the video below, the result is quite interesting.

The game also works with the gyroscope

The video of just over 2 minutes attests the sharpness of the image on the small screen of the Apple Watch. The FPS has no problem working 60 frames per second on the clock (640 x 480 pixels). We also observe the presence of four touch keys to go forward, turn left or right and shoot. Even the the digital crown is used and offers to look up or down. Most surprisingly, Quake uses the gyro of the smartwatch ; but this is more a demonstration than a useful function.

Spin earthquake even on an Apple Watch more than the challenge hence a useful function. The watch doesn’t offer the optimal conditions, but the performance is worth trying and you can even try it out. The game obviously isn’t available via the App Store, but all elements can be downloaded via GitHub.
