Soon after its debut, PGA Tour 2K23 needs to improve on one aspect of its predecessors if it hopes to rival EA Sports PGA Tour in 2019.
With both PGA Tour 2K23 and EA Sports PGA Tour launching between now and spring 2023, golf video game fans have a lot to look forward to next year. The production team got a lot right with PGA Tour 2K21, HB Studios’ previous golf game. However, if they want PGA 2K23 to compete with the upcoming golf game from EA, they will need to improve their online package significantly.
The PGA 2K Series has evolved significantly over the past ten years. PGA 2K21 provides golf enthusiasts with licensed PGA courses, real PGA Tour pros and a challenging simulation style of play. With the Tiger Woods PGA Tour streak ending in 2013 and the Rory McIlroy PGA Tour failing to deliver an unforgettable fan experience, HB Studios had the advantage of facing little competition from Electronic Arts during this period. Now that EA is returning to the golf course in 2023, PGA Tour 2K23 will need to provide features namely their online services in the upcoming game to keep gamers coming back for a new experience.
PGA Tour 2K23: Playing online matters
Unlike other sports video games, golf games often emphasize Create-A-Player features more than teams or specific players. Most players in PGA games choose a character and play almost entirely with that character as they try to win the FedEx Cup or manage online while getting new skill upgrades and gear.
The Tiger Woods PGA Tour series has done extremely well with the online component of the game, providing the player with various modes, leaderboards and chances to participate in her tour. To compete with EA’s game, PGA Tour 2K23 will need to improve significantly where PGA Tour 2K21 failed.
Despite its flaws, the EA Sports Tiger Woods PGA Tour series delivered a solid competitive multiplayer package with plenty of player customization options. Players have the chance to participate in regular four-player stroke play, match play or even team up with a friend for alternate stroke, best ball or four ball.
Even better, the Tiger Woods series includes leaderboards and ranking systems that allow players to enjoy their achievements and give them something to strive for. Even the widely criticized Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, which offered peer-to-peer multiplayer, included leaderboards highlighting the best players.
PGA Tour 2K21 provided players with a simulation experience and the best PGA Tour career mode in the series as a game that always emphasizes more on realism. No other golf game on a console has done the course building feature to the degree that HB Studios has, and when it added licensed PGA Tour courses in PGA Tour 2K2, the degree of variety and quality only increased.
While it’s never going to be in danger of having the limited selection of courses that haunted Rory McIlroy’s PGA Tour at launch, PGA Tour 2K21’s online offerings are relatively lacking compared to previous and upcoming competitors.
It won’t take much for PGA Tour 2K23 to offer multiplayer that sets it apart from EA Sports, but HB Studios will have to make online play the main focus of the game, not just a side feature. Even in PGA Tour 2K21’s menu, multiplayer is less a focus of the game than an aside, and the options are vague at best.
Players can’t play the online co-op mode they want because Rotate Shot and Best Ball alternate in availability each day, which may turn some fans off. If each mode of PGA Tour 2K23 is self-contained and always available to players, the online component of the game will be surpassed by the EA Sports option next year.
Leaderboards and efficient progression systems are essential as competitive players like to keep score.
The strong ranking and ranking system will keep gamers playing PGA Tour 2K23 long after its release, just like PGA Tour 2K21 did with its Battle Pass. Many top broadcasters also take players to their game of choice, and players want to know who is the greatest. The chance to move up the leaderboard is a nice motivator for players to play another round of PGA Tour 2K23.
