Multiple casualties in an explosion at a mosque in Kabul

A A powerful explosion hit a mosque in Kabul during the evening prayer this Wednesday and it is feared that there are several deaths and injuries that are yet to be ascertained. Information is still scarce and the different sources cited by the Reuters agency speak of different numbers of victims.

Police told Reuters there were multiple victims, but did not specify how much. “There was an explosion in a mosque…there are casualties, but the numbers are not yet clear,” said Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran.

A Taliban intelligence official said up to 35 people may have been wounded or killed, but he stressed the number could be higher. The Kabul Emergency Hospital said on its Twitter account that it had received 27 patients were injured in the explosionincluding a seven-year-old boy. The Al Jazeera network said at least 20 people had died, citing an unnamed official.

Other witnesses told the news agency that the blast was heard in a northern district of Kabul, shattering windows of nearby buildings. The imam of the mosque will be among those killed. Intelligence teams are at the scene of the explosion and the investigation continues.
