Instagram ‘Candid Challenges’ feature: All you need to know

Among the new features coming to the popular Instagram social media app is something called “Candid Challenges”. The feature, which looks like an implementation of the BeReal app, appears to be under development and could arrive in the app later this year.

Currently unedited, the Candid Challenges feature was first spotted by developer Alessandro Paluzzi, known for reverse engineering app code and identifying upcoming features before launch. An Instagram spokesperson also reportedly confirmed that the feature is an “internal prototype” but no further details were revealed.

What are candid challenges?

Candid Challenges takes a different (but not exactly new) approach to sharing your daily life on social media. Instead of selectively selecting the best photos and videos to share on platforms like Instagram or Twitter, the feature will send users a notification at a random time of day, at which point users have to share a photo from the front and rear camera at the same time, making emerge the challenging aspect of the function.

These photos will then be shared in user stories. Numerous reports have pointed out the similarity of the unedited feature to the 2019 BeReal selfie app, which has taken a similar approach to sharing photos.

It is currently unclear when and if Instagram will launch the feature. However, if parent company Meta decides BeReal is an Instagram competitor, we may see the implementation implemented later.

Similarly, Instagram has brought Stories functionality to rival Snapchat and Reels to rival TikTok in recent years. BeReal currently shows over a million downloads on Android and, according to an Engadget report, ranks # 1 on the Apple App Store among free apps.
