Huge explosion hits Kabul mosque

Many people fear death or injury after a huge explosion hit a Kabul mosque during evening prayers.

Police said Wednesday that the blast in the Afghan capital killed several people, but did not specify the number.

A Taliban intelligence official told Reuters that up to 35 people were injured or killed and the toll could rise further.

Al Jazeera cited an unidentified official who estimated the death toll at 20.

Witnesses told Reuters that the powerful explosion was heard in a neighborhood north of Kabul, which shattered the windows of neighboring buildings. Ambulances rushed to the scene.

“An explosion occurred inside a mosque … the blast caused casualties, but the numbers are still unclear,” the city police spokesman told Reuters. Kabul, Khalid Zadran.

The Taliban intelligence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the explosion occurred in a mosque among the faithful in the Khair Khana neighborhood of Kabul.

The mosque’s imam was among the victims and the toll could rise further, the source added. Intelligence teams were at the site of the blast and investigations were ongoing.

Other Taliban government officials did not respond to multiple requests for confirmation of victim data.
