Brits are left confused after the BBC weather app gives them a forecast for Ghana

Britons were left baffled after their BBC weather app told them their location was in Ghana, not where they actually were.

The BBC said it was working with Apple to fix the problem, which was caused by a bug affecting iOS users.

The popular weather app said people in the UK were in the West African country of Ghana, including the coastal towns of Ame or Takoradi.

Confused users took to social media to ask the BBC why their app thought they were in Africa.

One said: “Why does my weather app think my location is Ghana when I’m actually in Leeds, UK?”

Others expressed concerns that their phone had been hacked: “Serious question. I just opened the BBC weather app, it said the local time is Takoradi in Ghana – I’m in Leicester.

“Could this mean someone hacked my phone? What to do?’

Some people took to Twitter to question why the BBC’s weather app said they were now in Ghana. One concerned user asked if the phone had been hacked

People from Aberdeen, the Peak District and London are told by the app that they are in Ghana.

The average temperature in Axim and Takoradi ranges from 23C to 31C, rarely falling below 20C or above 33C.

In comparison, the average temperature in Aberdeen varies between 2C and 18C, the Peak District varies between 0C and 19C and London between 4C and 23C.

One user from Aberdeen said: “My weather app has decided that my current location is Axim, Ghana and that it is 30 degrees and very sunny.

“Maybe I’m in some sort of quantum flux or something, as looking out I definitely see a mostly cloudy corner of Aberdeen.”

Another added: “It’s funny, I could swear I’m home in Chiselhurst but my weather app tells me my current location is Takoradi in Ghana. I’ll take that.

The BBC said on its weather app FAQ webpage: “We are aware of a bug in the iOS version of the BBC Weather app where several locations in Ghana such as Axim or Takoradi are displayed instead of your current location.

“We are working with Apple to resolve this issue.

“Until we can resolve this issue, tapping ‘refresh’ should allow the app to determine your actual location.”

One user joked during the UK heatwave: “It’s so hot my weather app thinks I’m in Ghana.” The BBC said it was aware of the issue and would continue to work to resolve it

The BBC said the accuracy of location detection is “heavily dependent” on an individual’s devices, their settings and how they connect to the internet.

The company said cell towers, Wi-Fi connections and GPS can affect location services.

The weather app bug seems to have been an ongoing issue with complaints on social media for over a year.
