Apple AirTag leads to arrest of alleged serial luggage thief

Florida police arrested a suspected serial baggage thief, an airline subcontractor, using an Apple AirTag item tracker.

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) arrested Giovanni De Luca, 19, after the agency’s Airport Security Unit “learned of suspicious activity” involving various items stolen from Destin Airport. -Fort Walton Beach.

Two travelers reported baggage theft in July and August after their bags never arrived at their destination. The travelers’ luggage contained a combined total of items and jewelry valued at nearly $ 17,000, according to the OCSO.

The traveler who reported her bag stolen in July told authorities that her Apple AirTag pinged a location in Mary Esther, Florida.

The investigators met the employees who lived in that area and established “consensual contacts” with De Luca in his home, where they recovered the objects reported as missing in August.

The suspect admitted that she rummaged through the other traveler’s bag and removed her Apple AirTag. Her bags were not recovered, according to the sheriff’s office.

De Luca, an airline subcontractor, is currently grappling with two charges of theft.
