A company in Wales is working on the “Mediverso”. What does the virtual reality platform offer to healthcare professionals and medical students?
In South Wales, medical institutions are working with a VR training startup on a digital platform for healthcare professionals. The objectives of the “Mediverso”. to connect medical professionals and enable VR training from home.
The Mediverse: a metaverse for medicine
“You may have heard of the Metaverse,” Azize Naji, founder of the Welsh startup Goggleminds, begins explaining his project in an interview. It is a virtual reality space, he says, where users interact with a computer-generated environment and other people. “We have taken the ‘mediverse’ one step further.”
Mediverse is a digital platform focused on medical training in VR, he said. Unlike other medical training apps for virtual reality, medical professionals and students should be able to access Mediverse from anywhere and connect with each other nationally and internationally.
Clinical scenarios recreated virtually
Goggleminds recreates clinical environments and virtual reality scenarios as they occur in real life. Doctors, surgeons, nurses and students can do it test skills or consolidate knowledge without endangering themselves or their patients.
Mediverse VR experiences include simulations for medical students and nurses to properly prepare patients for procedures. Goggleminds is also working with the University of South Wales VR training specializing in the treatment of children.
“What we do is use the power of virtual reality technology to recreate clinical environments and clinical scenarios to replicate what you would get in real life,” said Naji. “So a doctor or nurse, surgeon or medical student can test these skills and retain that knowledge without endangering themselves or the patients.”
VR training is meant to provide a positive experience to those who learn these skills and make it more accessible, according to Naji.
Virtual reality in medicine has great potential
Goggleminds isn’t the only company looking to bring virtual reality to the healthcare industry. Immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality have the potential to be a billion dollar market in medicine. Market researchers estimate that this sector will be worth nearly $ 10 billion by the end of 2027.
In addition to training medical professionals, virtual reality for medicine offers other benefits. In the UK, hospitals use virtual reality as an anesthetic. VR anesthesia has only a single, rare side effect with motion sickness, according to experts. It also reduces hospital costs because in some cases, unlike general anesthesia, the next overnight stay is not necessary.
