Velma Is A Lesbian In New Scooby-Doo Movie, Years After James Gunn And Others Tried To Make Her Out

Velma is now officially a lesbian. Clips from the new movie ‘Trick or Treat, Scooby-Doo!’, in which the member of Mystery Inc. Scooby-Doo meets costume designer Coco Diablo went viral on Twitter, proving what Scooby fans have suspected for decades.

One tweet with over 100,000 likes read: “OMG LESBIAN VELMA FINALLY.” Scooby-Doo fans and people who work on it have long known that Velma is gay.

Even James Gunn, who wrote the first live-action films, and Tony Cervone, who helmed the “Mystery, Inc.” series, confirmed that the character was gay, but never got around to showing it on screen.

In 2020, James Gunn tweeted that he “tried” to make Velma a lesbian in the live-action films. “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my original script,” he wrote. “But the studio just watered it down and watered it down, it got ambiguous (the version picture), then nothing (the released version) and finally got a boyfriend (the sequel).”

During Pride Month in 2020, Cervone stated on Instagram, “I’ve said this before, but Velma on ‘Mystery Incorporated’ is not bi. she is gay. We always planned for Velma to act a little out of character when she was dating Shaggy because this relationship was wrong for her and she had unspoken difficulties with why. There are hints of why in this episode with the mermaid, and if you follow Marcy’s entire arc, it seems as clear as we could have done it 10 years ago. I don’t think Marcy and Velma had time to act on their feelings during the main timeline, but after the reset they are a couple. You may not like it, but that was our intention.
