Twitter could be ‘an accelerant to creating X, the everything app’

Hours after Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter, he tweeted that Twitter could be “an accelerator to create X, the app of everything”. Such an app already exists in China. WeChat is the Chinese “everything app” with messaging, payments, loans and its own app store with “mini” app.

Jonathan Guilford for Reuters:

WeChat dominates China, where its “mini” apps are the foundation of a $ 240 billion market. But those apps haven’t taken off in the US, where Apple’s iPhone has more than 50% market share …

Musk has a couple of things that even WeChat doesn’t have, though. For example: a rapidly growing global fleet of Tesla vehicles that could potentially create a new way into a universe of Musk apps …

Then there’s SpaceX, which is already partnering with wireless operator T-Mobile US to provide coverage from its Starlink satellite system. Combining this telecommunications backbone with transportation and in-app communications potentially becomes even more powerful and is something that is easier to do as part of a private business empire than a publicly traded company.

MacDailyNews takes: Elon Musk has a lot of work to do with Twitter alone, much less trying to integrate it into a super app.

As we wrote in January 2019:

The “super app” is an interesting conundrum for Apple, but it is unlikely to spread beyond China due to cultural differences, privacy concerns, acceptance of government oversight, antitrust regulation, differences in how the markets have started. mobile apps, ingrained behavior and more.
