Toyota says about 296,000 customer information may have been leaked

Tokyo-Toyota Motor Corp said on Friday it found that its T-Connect service may have leaked about 296,000 customer details.

Toyota said 296,019 email addresses and customer numbers of those using T-Connect, a telematics service that connects vehicles via a network, have potentially leaked. Affected customers are people who have registered on the Service’s website since July 2017 using their email address.

Toyota said in a statement that third-party access cannot be confirmed by the data server’s access history where the information was stored based on investigations by security experts.

Furthermore, it states that third party access “cannot be completely ruled out”.

However, there was no chance that users’ sensitive personal information, such as names, phone numbers, or credit card information, was leaked, Toyota said.

The Japanese automaker has not confirmed cases of information misuse, but warned that spam, phishing and unsolicited emails are likely to be sent to users’ email addresses.

The automaker said a contractor developing the T-Connect website accidentally uploaded portions of the source code with public parameters from December 2017 to September 15 this year.
