Emil Smith Rowe has revealed he was “left speechless” when England manager Gareth Southgate called out the Arsenal star last year.

The 22-year-old Gunner has three caps for England since his debut against Albania in November after starring for the Young Lions.

Smith Rowe has played at every level from U16 to U21 for England and helped the nation win the U17 World Cup in 2017.

He scored 18 goals in 86 games for Arsenal and helped Mikel Arteta’s side climb to the top of the Premier League table after an impressive start to the 2022-23 season.

Reflecting on his first call-up ahead of November’s World Cup in Qatar, Smith Rowe told England Football: “It [was] a bit surreal to be honest.

“It’s crazy just being around and with all the players. I’m so happy to be here and I’m just going to enjoy it as much as I can.

“This is probably the biggest achievement I’ve had in my career so far.

“It’s just different. Coming to St. George, being on a different training ground… it’s crazy. I’m honestly a little speechless.

“I still don’t know what to say about all this because I haven’t yet realized that I’m really here.

“Gareth called me and said ‘congratulations, you’ve been called up to the first team’ – I didn’t know what to do.

“At the time I was overwhelmed. I stammered, not knowing what to say. I just said “oh wow, thank you so much”.

“I ran downstairs to my mum and told her and she couldn’t believe it. She thought I was joking. It was very emotional, but she was very proud of me.

“After that I immediately called my dad to tell him the news and he was buzzing for me too.

“I’m also very close to my dad and I like to be a family man. I am always with them.
