New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) president Sonia Gandhi on Monday paid their respects to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards on this day in 1984 at her Safdarjung Road residence.
Later, Kharge and Sonia Gandhi also paid tributes at the Indira Gandhi memorial.
Rahul Gandhi paid homage at Bharat Jodo Yatra. “Day 54 of #BharatJodoYatra started at Shadnagar at 530 am. Bharat Yatris paid tribute to Sardar Patel and Indira Gandhi and then observed 2 minutes silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the Morbi suspension bridge tragedy in Gujarat,” tweeted Jairam Ramesh, the Congress General Secretary.
Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh in the midst of the Punjab rebellion and after Operation Blue Star. The operation was carried out to remove Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers from the Golden Temple of Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab.
Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of the country from 1966 to 1977 and then from 1980 until her death in 1984.
