Verdict of the film
Son of the famous singer MM Keeravani, Sri Simha Koduri is striving to stand out in Telugu cinema by addressing non-traditional topics. After a fascinating and suspenseful opening, Dongalunnaru Jaagratha veers off course with some distracting comic interludes. There was certainly some thrilling action in the film, but it could be easy to overlook in favor of the feeling that something was missing, making the film boring. The first and third acts of the film are the funniest, but the rest is boring.
Most of the film’s scenes include the protagonist, who is trapped in a car and filmed in a confined space, requiring the actor to deliver an intimate performance. To be fair, Simha Koduri did her best to keep her acting under wraps throughout the film, but the close-up nature of most situations made it clear that he was inexperienced. Simha seems to have a hard time playing other emotions outside of comedy, yet he has room to grow in this area. Samuthirakani did an acceptable job considering how little time she had available compared to the other artists who had cameos.
Dongalunnaru Jaagratha looks good on paper. Kaala Bhairava’s score is excellent; it adds to the drama of some key scenes. Yeshwanth C., the cinematographer, should be honored for his efforts. While much of the action takes place inside a car, the director used different angles to try to differentiate the characters’ points of view. The production values of the film are satisfactory.
Picking a survival thriller as the first film is brave, but Satish Tripura could have done more to add to the suspense and logic of the story. Yet his work in bringing Telugu to a hitherto unexplored genre deserves credit.
There are some slow spots in Dongalunnaru Jaagratha, but overall it’s a good survival thriller. The first Telugu-language survival thriller is now in theaters.
