‘Rust’ production reaches settlement with Hutchins estate

(News Nation) – The family of director of photography Halyana Hutchins, killed on the set of “Rust” last year, and Alec Baldwin have filed a manslaughter lawsuit against the actor and others.

Rust Movie Productions announced the resolution of the civil lawsuit on Wednesday morning.

As part of the deal, Halina’s husband Matthew Hutchins will executive produce the film, which will continue filming with the original cast in January 2023.

Baldwin’s attorney also released a statement, stating that everyone involved “retains a specific desire to do what’s best for Helena’s son.”

Hutchins was shot and killed on the set on October 21, 2021, when Baldwin unloaded a propeller gun after describing it as a “cool” weapon. Director Joel Souza was also injured when a Colt .45 caliber revolver exploded.

Souza said that in her attempt to bounce back, any decision to return to finish directing the film would only make sense if Helena Hutchins’ family were involved. He also said he was happy to be able to complete the work he and the cinematographer had started.

Helena Hutchins’ family filed a manslaughter lawsuit in February. But in August, the New Mexico medical investigator’s office decided the shooting was an accident after an autopsy and a review of law enforcement reports.
