Relations in the shadow of China

The US and Taiwan want to start trade talks to strengthen economic ties. In Switzerland it is difficult to do something. The idea of ‚Äč‚Äčtrade cooperation with Taiwan has little chance in Bern in the future.

The similarities between Taiwan and Switzerland are even greater than between China and Switzerland: Both countries are small, peaceful, democratic, export-oriented economies with strong economic policies and low levels of debt. Basically, they will be naturally compatible. But Switzerland has been following the one-China policy since 1950 and does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country. Therefore, one feels more committed to the Communist leadership in China, regardless of its regime.
