Putin agrees to nuclear inspectors

French President Emmanuel Macron told his Russian counterpart he was concerned about the safety risks at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the Elysée said.

Putin also agreed to send an expert mission from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to the site, he added.

The two presidents agreed to continue discussions in the coming days, according to a lecture sent to reporters from Macron’s office.

The Ukrainian nuclear operator said Friday that it suspected Moscow was planning to decouple the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant from the Ukrainian grid, a complex operation that Kiev says could spell disaster.

According to a reading of the Kremlin’s appeal, Putin said the bombing of the Russian-controlled nuclear site, which he attributed to Kiev, created the risk of a “large-scale disaster”.
