Odisha CM interacts with ASEAN Heads of Mission in India

  • Chief Minister invites ASEAN ambassadors to participate in Odisha Conclave’22 along with their trade delegations
  • CM seeks to strengthen trade and cultural ties between Odisha and ASEAN

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today called for strengthening trade and cultural ties between Odisha and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

On the eve of Make in Odisha-2022 from November 30 to December 4, the Chief Minister interacting with ASEAN Heads of Missions said, “Odisha has the boon of geography and is blessed with natural resources and major ports on the Bay of Bengal.

We are the gateway to the ASEAN region.

As we move into a modern world connected more and more through technology, I hope we can renew the strong ties between our two regions. I hope that in the coming years we can further strengthen our trade ties and not only that, I also hope that we can increase our cultural ties and offer more cultural exchange programs.”

The meeting was held at the Convention Centre, Lok Seva Bhavan.

The Chief Minister also invited the ambassadors to attend the Make in Odisha’22 conclave along with their trade delegations.

He further said that MIO Conclave’22 is a great platform to further strengthen business ties between the two regions and the Government of Odisha will facilitate government-business and business-to-business meetings with local companies and trade delegations of ASEAN nations.

He also asked them to set up country desks at the International Pavilion of the MIO Conclave.

Mrs. Patarat Hongthong, Ambassador at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Thailand, who led the team, expressed her sincere gratitude to the Chief Minister and the Government of Odisha for their hospitality. Talking about the historical trade and cultural ties between Odisha and the ASEAN nations spanning over 2,500 years, she said there is huge potential for trade and cultural relations with Odisha. She speaks highly of the beautiful setting of various sites in Odisha. She said that they have firm faith in the economic potential of Odisha and will highlight this in their respective countries. She said there is huge scope for exchange in the food industry, services, hospitality and medical tourism.

A high-level delegation of ASEAN Heads of Mission to India, led by Ms. Patarat Hongtong, Ambassador at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Thailand, India, concluded their 3-day visit to Odisha today with a fruitful meeting with Shri Naveen Patnaik, Chief Minister of Odisha. The delegation came to Odisha on October 26, 2022.

The ASEAN Heads of Mission delegation in New Delhi accepted the Chief Minister’s invitation to visit Odisha during the Ambassadors’ meeting held in New Delhi in August last year on the eve of Make in Odisha’22 Conclave.

The Chief Minister presented souvenirs to the guests.

The business meeting was also attended by senior Odisha government officials led by Chief Secretary Suresh Mahapatra, Development Commissioner PK Jena, Secretary to CM (5T) VK Pandian and senior officials of the state government.

Hemant Sharma, Principal Secretary, Industries Department welcomed the guests.

All major business associations and industries of Odisha also participated in the summit.

The purpose of the summit was to discuss ways to further strengthen trade as well as cultural ties between Odisha and Southeast Asia.

The three-day visit of the ASEAN delegation to Odisha was historic, reigniting the strong cultural and trade ties between the two regions.

This visit will open new avenues of contact not only between government but also between business and people.

It may also establish Odisha as the epicenter of India’s trade links with Southeast Asia.
