New Delhi:

Four months after Eknath Shinde took Shiv Sena’s numbers from the Maharashtra Assembly, Uddhav Thackeray today presented his set of party data – name, membership, symbol and all – to the Electoral Commission.

Although technically still president of the party, his father Bal Thackeray, founded five decades ago, Uddhav Thackeray admitted that most of his MPs are not with him. But he listed Eknath Shinde’s numbers as “zero”. Their reasoning: the rebel parliamentarians should not be counted because the motions of disqualification are pending against them.

The commission had asked for an answer from Uddhav Thackeray, who is technically the party leader, after Camp Shinde claimed responsibility for the party and its bow and arrow. He replied that since Eknath Shinde and his supporters had left the party, they could not claim the symbol until the assembly votes on November 3.

On the datasheet, Uddhav Thackeray claims he has 14 of Shiv Sena’s 54 MPs, all 12 members of the Legislative Council (upper house), seven of Lok Sabha’s 19 MPs, and all three members of Rajya Sabha. “The members who allegedly supported the petitioner have been disqualified and the disqualification motions are pending,” the memoir reads.

Eknath Shinde’s government won a majority with 164 votes in the 288-member assembly. Its ally, the BJP, has 106 MPs and also has the support of a few others.

Within party units – a factor in the EC’s decision – Team Thackeray recognizes that many of its leaders have changed loyalties. He says 11 of his 29 state officials are with Eknath Shinde.

But he says he has the support of 160 of the 234 members of the party’s national executive, last formed in January 2018. He says “zero” for Eknath Shinde.

It was among the main members that Team Thackeray made the biggest claim: “nearly 10 lakhs”, with just over 1.6 lakhs for the rebel faction. It is already collecting affidavits of support from party members and has set a target of more than 5 lakhs to be physically presented to the electoral panel.

The Thackeray team then claims all 2.62.542 “position holders in the organizational structure”. These include district unit heads in polling stations – it is interesting to note that there is a clear 50/50 ratio between men and women.

Eknath Shinde, whose rebellion was successful with the backing of the BJP, says his faction cannot be disqualified because it holds more than two-thirds of the legislature’s members, enough to evade the anti-defection law.

Eknath Shinde had the face of party founder Bal Thackeray in the background during his faction’s demonstration in Dussehra.

Shinde claimed Bal Thackeray’s “original Hindutva legacy” and claimed that his son Uddhav had severed ties with the BJP and the BJP’s “natural ally” to form a government with Congress and the NCP after the national elections. of 2018.

In a moment, the Electoral Commission must decide whether the army led by Thackeray can use the symbol of the bow and arrows for the Andheri East bypass. This is the first major election since the Shiv Sena uprising in June.

Mr. Thackeray recently won the battle of perception. He was given the traditional venue for the annual festival manifestation in Dussehra, Shivaji Park, and Eknath Shinde would hold the manifestation of him at another location in Mumbai.
