He appeared in the 2015 film Temper, directed by Puri Jagannadh. After a string of failures, the film brought Rama Rao much-needed popularity, and audiences and critics alike have praised his portrayal of dishonest cop Daya who eventually evolves into a good guy.
Following Temper’s popularity, Rama Rao starred in 2016 film Nannaku Prematho, directed by Sukumar and produced by Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and Reliance Entertainment. His performance earned him a second Filmfare Award for Best Actor-Telugu. For the film, NTR adopted a new look that included frozen hair and a long beard. has garnered praise from the public and critics.
With a final international total of 82.7 crore (US $ 11 million), the film surpassed Baadshah to become Rama Rao’s highest-grossing film to date. In the same year, Rama Rao co-starred with Malayalam actor Mohanlal in the film Janatha Garage, released in September and directed by Koratala Siva. The film had the second Tollywood opening of all time, after Baahubali: The Beginning, and became the highest-grossing Telugu film of the year.
The film had the highest opening for a Tollywood film in 2016. In the 2017 film Jai Lava Kusa, produced by stepbrother Nandamuri Kalyan Ram and directed by KS Ravindra, Rama Rao played three roles. The film Jai Lava Kusa was well received by reviewers and performed well at the box office, earning nearly 130.90 crore globally. He starred in the action drama directed by Trivikram Srinivas Aravinda Sametha in 2018, which became one of the most financially successful Tollywood productions of the year. Production of SS Rajamouli’s masterpiece RRR is currently underway, in which Rama Rao plays the 20th century independence fighter Komaram Bheem.
