Indra will contribute its microelectronics to the antennas of one of the world’s most advanced satellites

Indra has announced that it will manufacture several of the key components that will make the satellites military communications of the Spainsat NG program “in one of the most advanced in the world”.

As the company explains, fabricated thick layer hybrid circuits from Indra will multiply the transmission and reception capacity of the antennas that will serve the Spanish Armed Forces in their international missions, through Hisdesat as a contractor and operator of the satellites.

Indra emphasized that it is undertaking the production and testing of “one of the largest series of its type circuits that were once carried out in Europe for a space mission”.

In total, it will produce 800 hybrids of various models, such as the MCCM ─ a digitally reconfigurable hybrid that generates a multi-beam signal used by transmitting and receiving antennas and geolocation applications ─ and the IFSAM – the circuit that adapts the signal for use in geolocation applications – .

“This delicate task is carried out in the clean room of over 750 square meters, with which Indra has a plant in Aranjuez (Madrid)”, added the company.

There, the conditions of temperature and humidity and number of suspended particles they are fully controlled by Indra engineers. Thus, they prevent an external agent from affecting circuits that must remain operational without failure in geostationary orbit, thousands of kilometers from Earth, for more than a decade.

To ensure the reliability of these circuits, Indra engineers subject each one to a long series of tests. That is, technicians in white coats, protected by masks, hats and gloves so as not to pollute the environment.handle specialized tools verifying that each of these elements is ready to withstand the accelerations, radiations and extreme temperatures they will endure.

The Spanish Armed Forces

They also check for perfect encapsulation density, “given that any failure in a vacuum environment would cause the circuit to collapse,” Indra emphasized.

It should be noted that the Spainsat NG satellite will offer coverage to the Spanish Armed Forces in two-thirds of the planet, covering from the American continent to the easternmost tip of Asia. Its communication antennas are distinguished by offering advanced in-orbit reconfiguration capability: will allow the generation of various X-band communications beams through electronic targeting, offering the necessary coverage at all times, and will be able to move the beams at very high speed through what is known as beamhopping or jump.

In turn, the transmitting antenna also provides the power required for each beam in a flexible manner. In this line Indra claims that these antennae meet the highest standards for protection against interferences and any other types of threats. All this in order to guarantee the maximum capabilities and security of the Spanish Armed Forces during their deployment.

“However, this work is being done at a very high production rate to meet the demanding schedule,” he stressed. This sets the launch of the first satellite in late 2023 and the second in 2024.
