Hurricane Julia hits Nicaragua with strong winds

Hurricane Julia hit Nicaragua on Sunday with strong winds of 140 km / h and a typhoon, the US National Hurricane Center warned of dangerous weather for the next few days in the region.

The NHC said the storm approached Laguna de Perlas early Sunday. At 0500 (0900 GMT), it was located approximately 50km north-northwest of Bluefields.

The storm was expected to gradually weaken as it crossed Nicaragua, emerging into the eastern Pacific on Sunday evening. The NHC said it would have to travel near or along the Pacific coasts of Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala on Monday and Monday evenings.

“Severe flash floods and landslides are possible due to heavy rains in Central America and southern Mexico early next week,” the center said.
