With its new Ryan Murphy show Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Netflix tells the terrifying true story of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. The true crime drama follows Dahmer’s many murders as seen through the eyes of his victims, played by Evan Peters.
The series was first announced in March 2021 and the American Horror Story star was set to play the title role. This is the latest project to tell the story of Dahmer’s murders.
Between 1978 and 1991, Dahmer raped, murdered and dismembered at least 17 men and boys in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His crimes, which included cannibalism and necrophilia, shocked the world.

What is Jeffrey Dahmer guilty of?
In 1978, three weeks after graduating from high school, Dahmer killed for the first time. He picked up a hitchhiker named Stephen Hicks and took him back to his house. When Hicks tried to escape, Dahmer beat him to death with a 10-pound dumbbell and then strangled him.
After killing Hicks, Dahmer attended Ohio State University, but dropped out after just one semester because he continued to drink too much. The New York Times says he later joined the US Army and was honorably discharged.
He returned to Ohio to live with his father and stepmother, where he continued to drink heavily. According to sources, he was later sent to live with his grandmother in Wisconsin, where he had trouble keeping a job and was arrested several times, including for indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.
In November 1987, Dahmer killed again when he drugged a man named Stephen Twomey and appeared to attack him during a power outage. He later said he did not remember killing Twomey. After killing Twomey, Dahmer went out of his way to find people to seduce and kill. By 1991, he had killed seventeen men and boys.
How was Dahmer caught?
In July 1991, Dahmer approached three men and told them he would pay them if they posed for nude photos. Sources said a man named Tracy Edwards agreed and returned to his apartment with Dahmer. When they got there, Dahmer handcuffed Edwards, held a knife to his chest and told him he was going to eat his heart.
Edwards finally got away when he punched Dahmer and knocked him to the ground. This prompted him to escape through the front door, which was unlocked. He found two Milwaukee police officers and took them back to Dahmer’s apartment.
When they got there, they saw an open drawer with Polaroid photos of human bodies in various stages of dismemberment. History.com says that when Dahmer saw the Polaroid photos, he tried to run away, but they caught him and handcuffed him.

After admitting to killing four people, Dahmer was indicted on July 25 on four counts of first-degree murder. On August 6, he was charged with eight more murders, and on August 22, he was charged with three more. bringing the total number of murder charges against him in Wisconsin to 15.
In September 1991, Dahmer pleaded “guilty but not insane” because he had a mental illness. In January 1992, he changed his plea to “guilty but not insane.” Dr. Holly Schiff, a psychologist, told A&E True Crime that because Dahmer chose to plead insanity, “it’s up to him to prove to the jury that he was insane at the time of the murders.” The network says that if found to be honest, will go to prison.
If he is found to be insane, he will be sent to a state institution, from which he can later request to be released. The trial against him began on January 30, 1992 and closing arguments were made on February 14, 1992. The next day, it was ruled that Dahmer was not insane and not mentally disturbed when he killed each person. He was found guilty of 16 murders and sentenced to 16 life sentences in prison.
How did Jeffrey Dahmer die?
After he was convicted, he was sent to the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, but he did not stay there long. He was killed by a fellow prisoner on November 28, 1994. He was 34.
