Haverhill Public Schools, Malden Public Schools closed Monday as teachers strike

HAVERHILL — Teachers in Malden and Haverhill will go on strike Monday, forcing public schools in both areas to close.

Teachers’ unions in both communities negotiated contracts until they were unable to reach an agreement Sunday night.

“The School Committee bargaining team has chosen to stand up and refuse to continue bargaining,” the Malden Education Association wrote on Facebook.

In Haverhill, the school department released a statement saying, “After hours at the negotiating table over the weekend, we were unable to reach an agreement with the Haverhill Education Association (HEA) – the union representing our teachers. While some progress has been made over the past few days, we are extremely disappointed that union leadership and the Massachusetts Association of Teachers encouraged our teachers to take this illegal action.

According to the Haverhill School Department, all employees are expected to come to work. Negotiations will resume at 8 a.m. on Monday.

The Haverhill YMCA and Boys & Girls Club of Greater Haverhill will be open for children during the day. Parents of children who are registered for preschool or after-school programs at the YMCA will receive an email directly from the YMCA regarding childcare options.

Parents of children who are enrolled in Haverhill Public Schools grades K – 4 but are not registered for preschool or after-school programs at the YMCA can sign up for a drop-in program at the Plaistow Community YMCA. Pre-registration is required.

Students who are members of the Haverhill Boys and Girls Club can go to the club anytime during the day.

Those who have access to free lunch on Monday and breakfast on Tuesday can pick it up at various locations:
