A dark reimagining of the classic fable Pinocchio is headed to Netflix from Guillermo del Toro, Mark Gustafsson and Patrick McHale. Here’s an updated guide to everything we know about the animated project coming to Netflix in December 2022.

First it is worth noting that Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro has been a project on his bucket list for quite some time, as we’ll tell you below. However, hopefully many of his interviews still remain relevant in terms of what we can expect.

In January 2022, we were given our first look at the new project along with the news that the film would be headed to Netflix in December 2022.

The film first began life in 2011 (although it was originally conceived in 2010) when it was announced that a stop-motion animated film was in the works, with Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins writing the film and Gris Grimley and Mark Gustafson directed. Pinnochio’s darker story will be based on the book published in 2002, which was illustrated by Gris Grimly.

Fast forward to several years of production, including Gris Grimly dropping out, Del Toro taking the lead, and The Jim Henson Company stepping in to help with production. In November 2017, the project was believed to be dead and Del Toro even declared it as such.

Netflix finally announced in October 2018 that it would release the film.

When is Pinocchio coming to Netflix?

For the longest time, the film was slated for a 2021 release, but we can confirm that Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is coming to Netflix on Friday, December 9, 2022.

2022 will be the year of Pinocchio.

Netflix will go up against Disney’s Pinnochio, which is best known for its involvement in the IP. Robert Zemeckis is on board to direct the film, which is slated to be much more family-friendly than the version we’re talking about here.

Lionsgate is also getting in on the action Pinocchio: A True Story. Their animated feature film was released in March 2022 on VOD services.

Why does Pinocchio take so long to produce?

Simply put, this is a huge project that requires a lot of time. Stop-motion films are notoriously expensive and time-consuming. Just check out the Kubo and the Two Strings time lapse below to see how much goes into a small part of the film.

Pre-production (according to IMDb) began in March 2019, with all filming taking place in Portland, Oregon, at which point the film is believed to have actually begun physical production in January 2020, before entering post-production in June 2021 .

What we know so far about Pinocchio

In a 2015 interview, Guillermo was asked about the project while promoting Crimson Peak. Guillermo del Toro spoke to HeyUGuys, who tells them that he is indeed using the source material, which is “weird in a disturbing way” compared to the Disney film.

“We’re bringing back some of the book’s fairytale charms.” He also talks a bit about the history of when the book was written specifically the politics of the era.

This was reiterated in October 2018 when Del Toro said the following:

“This is not Pinocchio for the whole family. Of course [it’s a political film]. Pinocchio during the rise of Mussolini, do the math. A puppet during the rise of fascism.”

Who works and voices Pinocchio for Netflix?

For most, Guillermo del Toro is the big draw for this project and will serve as director and screenwriter.

It’s a true passion project for the prolific artist, who said in October 2018:

“No character in history has had as deep a personal connection with me as Pinocchio… I’ve wanted to make this film for as long as I can remember.”

Guillermo del Toro has worked on numerous Netflix projects in the past and continues to work on new ones in the future as part of a broad deal with Netflix. His next project after Pinocchio expected to be 10 after midnight.

In February 2020, we received information about the first additions with three votes. The voice cast of Netflix’s Pinnochio includes Ron Perlman, Christopher Waltz and David Bradley. David Bradley is believed to be voicing the character of Geppetto.

On February 17, two more actors were attached to the project. They come in the form of Ewan McGregor and Tilda Swinton, who have both been added to the cast.
