Employee found dead in Columbia mall’s Belk bathroom: Authorities in South Carolina say a woman died in a public restroom at a Columbia department store, but it took four days before her body was found.
According to the deputy chief of police in Columbia Melron KellyThe woman, who appeared to be in her early 60s, was found dead in a toilet stall at the Belk department store in Columbiana Centre, a shopping mall in the city’s northwest quarter, on Monday.
Police said a cleaning cart was seen outside the woman’s bathroom with a cubicle that had a closed door when she was found there. Police have not yet released the woman’s identity, but the retailer on Wednesday identified her to USA TODAY as Bessie Durham.
According to Kelly, the woman’s body was discovered after her relatives reported her missing to police on Monday. According to the family, their mother was last seen leaving for work at the plant 15th of September, Kelly stated.
“At the same time, police received a call from the store across town reporting a body found,” Kelly said Wednesday. The woman’s death does not yet show signs of foul play, according to a preliminary investigation, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

“First and foremost, we send our deepest condolences to the family of Bessie Durham, who was found in a family restroom at our Columbiana Center.” Rohlik said. “We are actively working to find out what happened. In the meantime, we have also made counselors available to associates seeking support.”
The store was temporarily closed while police examined the crime scene. It was open to the public again on Wednesday.
