Verdict of the film

Many people saw Nene Vasthunna’s ad and thought it would be another blockbuster for Dhanush and Selvaragavan, but early reviews indicated the film would be more discreet. Films like “Pudhupettai”, “Kadhal Kondein” and “Mayakkam Enna” are among the many classics that Dhanush and Selvaragavan have made.

Dhanush’s efforts weren’t enough to preserve the film. The film gains momentum in the second half when the protagonist’s story is revealed and the trauma he experienced as a young man provides a rather plausible explanation for his out-of-the-ordinary behavior. The opening of the film is really engaging because it stages the main characters and the story. The premise of the film is intriguing, but the drama is unbearable, and the incredibly slow storytelling kills any momentum the film might have had in the first half.

Dhanush convincingly plays two very different roles: a family man, in which he is simply relaxed and easy going, and a madman, in which he shows his true courage. Both Elli Avaram and Induja have produced excellent performances, Selvaraghvan has re-established himself as a credible actor, and the rest of the cast have done a great job overall. Audiences are fascinated by the film’s Dejavu-related twists.

Director Selva Raghavan, who is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful and original voices in Indian cinema, gave his all to Nene Vasthunn but ultimately failed to captivate viewers with her story. The story, direction and characterization of her are unparalleled.

Technically, Nene Vasthunna works because Om Prakash managed to film some stunning landscapes in Ooty, as well as some intense close-ups of the film’s protagonists and intriguing scenes. Although the Telugu and Tamil versions of Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs weren’t up to par, the background soundtrack was memorable and the rest of the technical team did a great job.

Viewers who enjoy a wide variety of cinematic styles will find a lot to enjoy in Nene Vasthunna.

Plus points:

  • Performance by Dhanush
  • Premise

Negative points:

  • Slow storytelling
  • Lack of emotion
