Derry Girls – Picture: Channel 4
Derry girls finished its third and final season on Channel 4 in the UK this summer and will appear on Netflix worldwide (including the UK) in October 2022.
The comedy series, written by Lisa McGee, has become a fan favorite over the years following a group of girls (and James) growing up during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The series first debuted on our screens over four years ago in January 2018. Netflix acquired the international rights exclusively in late 2018, hosting the show under the Netflix Original umbrella.
For those who don’t know, Derry girls season 3 is the show’s final season, and while the creators haven’t closed the door on the characters returning, it’s certainly the end for the foreseeable future.
Here’s how creator Lisa McGee remarked at the end of the show:
“The plan was always to have a bye after three series. Derry Girls is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… begin to become adults, while around them the place they call home also begins to change and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase – which was small, magical time window. Derry Girls is a love letter to where I come from and the people who have shaped me. It was an honor to write it and I will forever be proud of all it accomplished. I would like to thank the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for supporting us. Thanks also to the team behind the series, the amazing Hat Trick productions and a special thanks to Channel 4 – the channel has grown in viewing; the channel that made me want to write comedy and the only channel that could do our show.
Who knows if Erin, Claire, Orla, Michelle and James will return someday under a different guise, but for now! it’s all about us and we’re excited to start filming this series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure.”
Season 3 consisting of 7 episodes aired between April 12 and May 18, 2022.
Derry girls Season 3 should be on Netflix before the end of 2022
Based on the fact that 115 days passed between the final air date and the Netflix release date for Season 2 of Derry girlswe should see the final season added before the end of 2022 based on this trend.
We originally predicted that if there was a 115-day delay like Season 2, then the show would be released on Netflix in September 2022.
We weren’t far off with Netflix’s confirmation in late August 2022 that the series would arrive in its entirety on October 7, 2022.

Derry girls Season 3 won’t be on Netflix UK for a few years
Finally, Netflix UK will be the last to get the series, but it’s unclear when that will happen.
We saw season 2 temporarily added to Netflix UK in July 2020, but it was quickly removed just days after.
Once we get an actual firm release date for Season 2, we’ll be able to predict exactly when Season 3 will drop, but given the current trend, it might not be for a few years.
