Davison nabs pole for Sandown Supersprint

Will Davison took pole position ahead of Supercar championship leader Shane van Gisbergen for the Sandown Supersprint.

Davison grabbed his seventh pole of the year to tie more with Cameron Waters in 2022, with Waters missing Saturday’s Top Ten shooting entirely.

The Shell V-Power driver was fastest in the first free practice session on Friday before increasing his speed to set the best time of the weekend in the second qualifying.

It was therefore the last car out of the shooting and beat van Gisbergen’s time of 0.187 to secure pole position.

“I loved it. I haven’t had that many chances in a while, but I’ve had a few this year to pull off an under pump shooting, so a big thumbs up to the whole team,” Davison told Fox Sports.

“It’s been an important week for the team and you know, on a circuit, we probably weren’t the best last year, but we worked even harder to bring a fast car here.

“This year went well, it was a lot of fun (and) now the pressure is on us to convert to the race. But I like the pressure and we will do our best ”.

Erebus driver Will Brown completed the top three after performing well in free practice sessions and all three qualifying stages.

But the same cannot be said for Waters, who slipped to 12th on the grid, skipping the Top Ten of penalties altogether.

He will have his hands full to beat the leaders in Saturday’s Race 24 at Sandown as he tries to recover the differential of 393 points behind leader van Gisbergen.

Race 24 at Sandown Raceway begins at 4:45 pm AEST.

Race 24 qualification:

1. Will Davison (Shell V-Power Racing) 1: 07.650

2. Shane van Gisbergen (Red Bull Ampol Racing) +0.187

3. Will Brown (Erebus Boost Mobile Racing) +0.319

4. Anton De Pasquale (Shell V-Power Racing) +0.355
