Cyber fraudsters ‘honey trap’ youth, extort Rs 71,000

Bhubaneswar: Cybercriminals allegedly trapped a youth in Odisha’s Khurda district and extorted Rs 71,000 from him, police said.

The victim Benudhara Muduli has lodged a complaint with the cyber police station in Bhubaneswar. Speaking to the media here on Wednesday, he claimed that he recently received a video call from an unidentified nude girl on his Whatsapp.

“Later I got a call from a person claiming to be an IPS officer, Rahul ji. He said he has nude photos and videos and a case will be filed against me. He demanded Rs 1.5 lakh to withdraw from the case,” Muduli said.

Fearing a police case, Benudhar said he transferred Rs 71,000 to the cyber criminals’ account numbers in four installments. Cyber police officials said they have started an investigation into the matter.

This is not the first such incident in Odisha. Recently, a Bhubaneswar-based engineer was similarly trapped and lost Rs 25 lakh.
