Cristiano Ronaldo is in line to start the Manchester derby amid United’s striker shortage

Like Ronaldo, Maguire is the other big casualty since Ten Hag’s arrival as manager.

The defender was only expected to be among the substitutes against City after losing his starting place to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. But a muscle injury sustained during his error-strewn performance in England’s draw with Germany at Wembley dealt another blow to his hopes of quickly rediscovering his form and confidence.

It now remains to be seen whether Maguire will be deemed fit enough to face Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League in Cyprus next Thursday.

The former agent of another United outcast, Donnie van de Beek, has revealed how the club’s indulgence in Paul Pogba has forced the frustrated Dutch midfielder to consider a move away from Old Trafford. Pogba finally left United in the summer while Van de Beek stayed, but the Dutchman remains a peripheral figure at The Hague.

“I saw the frustration with the way he was treated by Manchester United and he saw up close what I did to turn things around. But from the day he was not allowed to leave Manchester United again, it was final,” Guido Albers told Voetbal Primeur in the Netherlands.

“In Holland, Dhoni got all the credit, performed well and was super popular with the fans. Then he never played for Manchester United. Relations between him and the club really cooled down quite a bit.

“He had to compete against Paul Pogba, who turned up late to training camp, apologized and was allowed to play again – in place of a boy who trained 10 hours a day for eight weeks to show, that it is good enough.

“Then I had this frustration thrown at me. I underestimated what not playing more did to him mentally. I should have looked earlier: how can I help him?’

Pogba, meanwhile, has blamed injuries in part for his unsuccessful second spell at United. The French midfielder joined Juventus as a free agent this summer, six years after returning to United in a club-record £89million deal.

“I like to think and say that my heart made the choice to return to Juventus. Maybe it was also the right time to come back here,” Pogba told GQ Italia.

“The last three years in Manchester, also affected by injuries, did not go the way I wanted, that’s no mystery. Juventus came after two years without winning the Scudetto. It was a good challenge for both of us and maybe it was the right time to come together and try to get back where we belong: me and Juventus.
