Bhubaneshwar: In a historic decision by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the contract appointment system has been abolished from Odisha government tonight. The EC announced the abolition of the contract system at work in practice this evening.
During his address, the Minister said: “Today I am pleased to announce that the State Cabinet has decided to permanently abolish the contract system of employment. Even today in many states there is no regular recruitment and they still continue with contract system of recruitment. But in Odisha, the era of contractual recruitment is over. I’ve been waiting for this moment. The notification will be out tomorrow. More than 57 thousand employees will benefit. The government will spend approximately Rs 1,300 crore annually. This decision brings an early Diwali to their family members.”
According to reports, the Odisha Contractual Employees Union has been demanding that the six-year contract period be included in the length of service. In addition, they organized mass protests demanding permanent employment.
Later on October 13, the CM had a meeting with the Union workers through video conference and assured them to look into the matter. Keeping its promise, the SC announced the abolition of the contractual appointment system.
This decision of the MC relieved about 70 thousand contractual employees in the state. Also, the people of Odisha welcomed Naveen Patnaik’s decision.
He later took to his Twitter account and informed about the historic decision of the state government.
