Can Caffeine Cause Acne: Expert Reveals

Are you someone who can’t start the day without coffee? We all agree that coffee is like the elixir of life. From the morning cup of coffee to the cup of coffee on a date, it’s truly an essential part of our life. However, all good things have some drawbacks. And excessive caffeine consumption can lead to some unwanted health problems and can affect the skin as well. Although coffee is known to boost energy, boost metabolism, and more, it can have a negative effect on the skin if you end up drinking too many cups of coffee.

One of the most common accusations against coffee is that it causes acne. It’s not the coffee ingredients that can directly cause acne on the skin, but what you consume and how much you consume play an important role in keeping the skin in good condition.

Acne is a common skin problem.

Can caffeine cause acne?

Coffee increases stress levels

Coffee is rich in antioxidants which are one of the main components for keeping the skin free from free radicals. However, caffeine has a direct impact on the hormone cortisol which is a stress-inducing hormone. So when you consume too much coffee, it has a big impact on your stress levels.

Too much cortisol in your body leads to excessive sebum production on your skin. Sebum and oil clog pores and form acne. As coffee increases stress levels and, in turn, increases oil production on the skin, it causes acne.

coffee interrupts sleep

Aside from that, coffee is famous for being that essential energy drink when you have a long day at work. But coffee disrupts the sleep cycle and your body ends up being deprived of sleep. Lack of sleep also causes more stress in your body which leads to acne on the skin. Our body needs an adequate amount of sleep to repair, restore and stimulate cell production. Hence, when our body does not have the right opportunities to heal the skin during sleep, it causes skin disorders.

Coffee with milk can trigger acne

Unless you’re on a decaf, the dairy products in your coffee can definitely play with your skin condition. Milk contains lactic acid which has a direct effect on the skin and can cause acne. In addition, milk contains insulin which increases the production of sebum on the skin. The chances of getting acne increase when there is excess oil and clogged pores.

Is your coffee too sweet?

If you like to add a lot of sugar to your coffee, you may want to control that craving. Sugar is responsible for releasing insulin in our body. When there is a surge of insulin in our body, it leads to the production of sebum which clogs the pores and eventually leads to acne. So skipping the sugar in coffee can be good for your skin.

So coffee lovers now know that your coffee can cause acne. Keep your caffeine intake at moderate levels and you can have the best of both worlds: coffee and fair skin.
