BTS’s Jin’s “The Astronaut” sold 700,000 copies on its first day

Seoul: BTS’s Jin’s first official solo single has sold more than 700,000 copies on its first day of release, his agency said on Saturday.

“The Astronaut” sold 700,754 copies a day after it was released at 1 p.m. on Friday, Big Hit Music said, citing data from Hanteo Chart, a domestic market tracker, Yonhap reported.

This marks high sales for a single-song album.

“The Astronaut” also topped the iTunes Top Songs chart in 97 countries around the world, including the United States, Great Britain, Germany and France, as of 9 a.m. Saturday.

The song’s music video, about an astronaut crash-landing on Earth, also garnered more than 17 million views on YouTube as of 2 p.m.

“The Astronaut” is a pop-rock song co-written by Coldplay, with the British band also playing on the record.

Jin participated in writing the lyrics, expressing his affection for Army, the K-pop septet’s global fandom.

Jin’s deeply sentimental voice, accompanied by a soothing acoustic guitar sound and a gradual build-up of synth sound, creates the mysterious and dreamy mood of the song.

Following the completion of promotional activities for ‘The Astronaut’, Jin is set to temporarily leave the music scene to become the first member of BTS to sign up for mandatory military service.
