Biden asks if the deceased congressman was at the White House event: At a White House briefing on food insecurity on Wednesday, President Joe Biden asked the whereabouts of an MP who was absent a month ago.
Biden took a moment during his remarks at the event, which marked the first White House hunger conference since 1969, to acknowledge a number of political figures from both parties.
The bill to set up Wednesday’s conference had the support of all the individuals he named and included the late Indiana Republican Jackie Walorski as a co-sponsor.
“I want to thank all of you here,” Biden said, “for — including bipartisan, elected officials as representative of the government? Senator Brown, Senator Booker, Representative Jackie, are you here? where is jackie I think she would have been here to help make that a reality.” Biden said.
It seems he may have realized mid-sentence when he said, “I think she would have been here.” Walorski, 58, died in a car accident last month that also claimed the lives of two of her employees.
In 2013, she began her term in Congress. The lawmaker co-chaired the House Hunger Caucus before his death. Later on Wednesday, when questioned about the remark by reporters, White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre clarified that Biden was actually referring to Walorski, according to CNN.

“The president named congressional advocates on this issue and recognized her incredible work. He had already planned to welcome the congresswoman’s family to the White House on Friday. There will be a bill signing in her honor next Friday, so of course she was on his mind.” – said Jean-Pierre.
“She was the most important thing for the president. He looks forward to discussing her remarkable legacy of public service with them when he sees her family next Friday.
After she died, Biden released a statement in which he and the first lady, Dr. Jill Biden, expressed their “shock and sadness” at her death. White House flags were flown at half-mast in her memory.
“We may have represented different parties and disagreed on many issues, but she was respected by members of both parties for her work on the House Ways and Means Committee on which she served.” Biden’s statement last month said.
“She also co-chaired the Home Hunger Caucus, and my team and I have valued her partnership as we plan a historic White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health this fall that will be marked by her deep concern for the needs of rural America.
Walorski and the other members of the congressional team responsible for organizing the conference were mentioned by White House Domestic Policy Council Director Susan Rice concluded a panel later during the hunger conference on Wednesday.

The White House is getting belligerent
On Wednesday, when reporters repeatedly questioned him about Biden’s remarks at the conference, Jean-Pierre reacted tensely. Although he was questioned about this several times during the White House press conference, Jean-Pierre refused to say whether Biden was wrong.
Instead, she claimed the late congresswoman was on the president’s mind when he made the remark, and even referred to a reporter as “rough” at some point to bring up the subject.
As Jean-Pierre read the president’s remarks about Walorski, she responded: “I completely understand. I just explained – she was at the top of her mind. You know, what we were able to witness today and what the president was able to bring up at this conference, this event was how her focus on wanting to address and combat food insecurity in America. And this is something that he exalted and revered.
When CNN Phil Mattingly pressed Jean-Pierre on why the president was looking for the deceased congresswoman at the conference, the press secretary said, “I don’t think it’s all that unusual to have someone who’s in first place, especially since there’s a big event.”
She disputed claims that the president appeared confused or that the teleprompter turned on an error. The reporter who asked if there was a mistake was “jumping to many conclusions,” Aaccording to Jean-Pierrewho added “If it was, I would have claimed it.” She said she did not understand why the president’s prepared remarks from the conference needed to be made public, and so she would not commit to it.
The White House usually releases a transcript of the president’s spoken words, which may differ from the text that is preloaded on a teleprompter. Another reporter asked: “The confusing part is — why, if she and the family (are) first, does the president think she lives and is in the room?”
“I don’t find it confusing,” Jean-Pierre answered. “I think a lot of people can talk sometimes when you have somebody who’s on top – that’s it.” “Every day I think about John Lennon, but I don’t look around for him.” another reporter said.
Jeanne Pierre insisted, repeating ten times that the congresswoman was “before mind”. She added that the comment should be seen in the “context” of him yelling at congressional leaders about food insecurity.

She also dismissed a question about whether the president felt he had handled the situation appropriately, saying she had already responded to him earlier and that her response “it certainly won’t change.”
